Born in ’75, Rebecca is not only the author behind Soap Deli News Blog, but she is also the owner of Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen – a handmade bath and beauty shop that was established in 2001, the year after she graduated college with a fine arts degree. Rebecca is also a mother of a wonderful teenage son and believes in both hard work and people before profit. She also enjoys DIY projects, live local music gigs, dancing, shopping and buying handmade – and when things slow down in winter – a bit of reading.
Despite being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2012, she has been more determined than ever not to let anything keep her down. In addition to her shop, blog and other activities, also works full time for another small business owner. She is native to Roanoke, VA and continues to live, work and play in the Roanoke Valley.
You can follow Rebecca on Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Or sign up for her newsletter. You can also find Rebecca at Kanelstrand Blog – an inspirational blog for people who want to live a simple stress-free life – where she is a contributor.
Quirky Facts
Rebecca lives in the Historic Arts District in her city – also commonly referred to as Old Southwest. It’s central to all of her favorite shops and restaurants in addition to being just five minutes away from downtown where she enjoys listening to local bands, splurging on the occasional fine dining when her wallet allows, and browsing the locally owned shops and farmer’s market.
A gemini by nature despite what the new horoscope says she is now, Rebecca loves enjoying life in the moment and exploring new artistic and creative pursuits when her schedule allows. She’s dabbled in pottery, painting – oil, acrylics and watercolors, screen printing, photography and of course soapmaking. She’s itchy to try her hand at embroidery soon – though she’s terrible at sewing – and hand carving stamps.
She loves music and can get lost in the perfect song, even in a crowd full of people and always dances like no one is watching – especially in public.
When she’s focusing on something and shutting everything else out, Rebecca tends to chew on her hair. It’s a horrible habit, but not one she thinks she’ll ever be able to break. Her boyfriend calls her out on it all the time. And every time he does she had no idea she was doing it.
Rebecca lives on the entire bottom floor of an old house that’s over a hundred years old. This is probably a good thing because she’s a notorious stomper. Much like her own personality, the house is full of character with no straight lines or perfect right angles. Even the floors in every room tend to slope toward the center.
She strongly feels that life is entirely too short and therefore that no one should live with regrets – especially regrets of never doing something – and equally that one should change the things in life that make him or her unhappy because it’s silly to suffer through something when you can do something about it.
She is going to Floyd Fest for the first time ever in summer of 2013. He’s had her ticket since early March and not even the worst of worst days is going to prevent her from rocking out like it’s the 60s at Woodstock.
Rebecca’s dog is a stubborn but fabulous miniature dachshund named Jasper. He’s spoiled to end and will paw at his dish in annoyance if she forgets to sprinkle Parmesan cheese on his dinner. However, thus far Jasper has been spared having to wear any sort of doggie attire. She did buy him a sweater once, but he ate it. She does keep threatening to have someone sew him a nifty little sailor’s outfit though.
She’s a bit of a control freak and will organize her groceries on the conveyor belt by type so they get bagged properly.
While she loves other awesome, crafty, creative and just downright nice people, Rebecca is actually still a little shy and sometimes comes off as a snob though that is never her intention. Even in college sitting in the classroom in the very back of the class, Rebecca would blush and turn beet red if she got called on by a professor. Luckily, she doesn’t often blush anymore. It does take her a long time though to feel comfortable enough around someone to call them a close friend.
