DIY Handmade Foot Soap Recipe - Make Your Own Cold Process Exfoliating Foot Soap

After many many years of producing and selling my handmade Exfolimint™ Peppermint Foot Soap through Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen, I have decided to retire this particular handmade soap. And, since I am retiring it, I thought I'd share the recipe so you can make your own!
Handmade Exfolimint™ Peppermint Foot Soap from Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen
My handmade, cold process Peppermint Exfolimint™ Foot Soap is a special handmade soap created just for feet! It's refreshingly scented with natural peppermint essential oil and contains finely ground pumice to scrub rough soles to a happier state. Forget about that boring pumice stone, this soap is the perfect replacement, exfoliating tough skin as it cleans. You'll love the difference the fresh peppermint scent and the addition of shea butter make in these unique bars. It works like a pumice stone but without the dry feeling pumice stones leave afterward. This soap is all natural and vegan. Want to make your own stockpile this winter so you have awesome feet by sandal season in spring? Then read on for the recipe! (This recipe is intended for personal use only and is not to be reprinted without permission.)

DIY Handmade Exfolimint™ Peppermint Foot Soap Recipe
(Recipe © Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen)

Ingredients:
33.6 oz. 76° Melt Point Coconut Oil
38.4 oz. Olive Oil
19.2 oz. Palm Oil
4.8 oz. Unrefined Shea Butter

32 oz. distilled water
13.8 oz. sodium hydroxide

2.5 oz. peppermint essential oil
.75 oz. tea tree oil
1 1/2 cups fine ground pumice

Instructions:
If you've never made cold process soap before, please read my cold process soapmaking tutorial and do some research before getting started. You need to take proper safety precautions to avoid getting hurt and to create a successful batch. I also highly recommend the book The Soapmaker's Companion: A Comprehensive Guide with Recipes, Techniques & Know-How (Natural Body Series - The Natural Way to Enhance Your Life) by Susan Miller Cavitch. Additionally, you can click here to see my step by step photos of the cold process soapmaking method from the album on my business fan page for Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen.

Start by measuring your distilled water into a glass or plastic container. Then weigh out your lye and slowly stir it into the water until dissolved. Because lye puts off fumes, you'll either want to do this outside or under an exhaust fan. Set aside to cool.

In a stainless steel pot, weigh out the coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, and shea butter. Heat on the stove until fully melted then set aside to cool.

Weigh out your essential oils and measure out the pumice and set aside.

Once your lye water and oils have reached about 100°F you can begin mixing. Slowly pour your lye water into the melted oils. Then mix well using a stick blender. Once your soap has reached a thin trace, stir in the essential oils and fine ground pumice. Continue stirring until thoroughly mixed and trace is achieved. Pour into your mold, cover, and insulate. You can unmold your soap 24 hours later and cut into bars to cure. Wait 3-4 weeks before use.

I use basic wooden loaf molds for this recipe measuring 11"L x 3.5"W x 3.25" H from the interior, but you can substitute basically any loaf pan mold. This recipe yields three of my loaf molds with some room to spare at the top or approximately 36 3.5- 3.8oz. bars. If you'd like to make your own molds, you can find a tutorial for crafting a wooden soap mold for cold process soap here.

For quality, organic soapmaking oils and essential oils I recommend shopping at Mountain Rose Herbs. I generally use triple distilled Japanese peppermint oil in my soaps as it doesn't smell as medicinal, but the choice of peppermint essential oil you use is up to you.

While supplies last, you can still buy this soap online at Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen. It is currently on sale for $4 per bar. Following is some of the feedback I've received regarding my handmade foot soap:

Arrived quickly and soon as it did, I scrubbed my sorry little feet real good. It's an EXCELLENT product and I recommend it to all!
I love my soap! And, in time, I will learn to love my feet again. Thank you! I will definitely be back.
I love your Exfolimint Peppermint Foot Soap. It really works! I love the ground pumice for exfoliating and the oils and butter for moisturizing. One day I used my pumice stone in the shower instead of this soap to see the difference and my stone dried the soles of my feet out. I was surprised the soap did a much better job and kept my feet moisturized too. If anyone enjoys the smell of peppermint, you can definitely smell it. I am not a big fan of mints but, I found the scent while showering exhilarating. It wakes you up!
I love love LOOOOOVE this soap! :) One smell and I ran off to the bathroom and gave myself a soak and scrub. Then I did the same for my husband's feet. Now that's love (of him AND the soap)!
Have fun and happy soaping! And for more cold process soap recipes, click here.

New Men's Scented Handmade Soaps and A Handmade Soap Giveaway!

I've been a busy bee crafting my new line of handmade men's scented soaps. Last week I blogged about my upcoming Mountain Lake and Fragrant Woods Handmade Shea Butter Soaps. New Handmade Men's Soaps from Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen.
One of my newest soapy creations is this Handmade Forest Pine Men's Shea Butter Soap. Created just for men, this green colored, handmade soap is scented with a blend of fir, orange, pine, and a hint of natural peppermint essential oil. This fragrant handmade soap contains epsom salts which are often used to sooth sore muscles and reduce swelling.

I also just made a Natural Handmade Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oil Soap. This handmade soap is scented with only pure eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils and is a great scent for men. The tea tree essential oil makes this handmade soap suitable for those who are prone to oily skin or acne. Additionally, it contains a thin strip of green, exfoliating loofah through the center of the bar.

Finally, I also produced an All Natural Handmade Men's Cedarwood and Sage Shea Butter Soap. This handmade men's soap is scented with a fragrance blend of cedarwood, sage and petitgrain essential oils. It contains a thin strip of exfoliating apricot kernel meal which runs through the center of each bar to help scrub away dirt and grime. Look for all of these handmade soaps for men as well as a limited edition men's soap sampler pack available for sale sometime in December from Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen.

New Handmade Men's Shea Butter Soaps

One of my favorite things about making handmade soap is seeing the results when I unmold a new log. Today I did just that with my two new upcoming handmade soaps for my men's line and I was super excited with the results.
I was thrilled by how easy it was to create a decorative touch for my Handmade Fragrant Woods Shea Butter Soap. I simply layered a bit of powdered cinnamon between pouring layers of the soap for a simple yet stunning effect that I like to think is  reminiscent of the hiking trails local to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where I reside. And the scent? Well, it's equally amazing. I scented this masculine soap with a blend of Oakmoss, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Cedarwood, Lemon, and Petigrain.
I also love the lake blue color of my new Handmade Mountain Lake Shea Butter Soap for men. It was just unmolded today as well and is currently on the curing rack. I have not always have the best of luck coloring my handmade soaps with a blue pigment. Certain fragrance oils or the addition of sea salt have been known to change the color of the soap from a blue to a green. I once had the same blue pigment turn a new batch of handmade soap into a pea soup green color. Luckily I was able to give the soap a creative name and my Mill Mountain Soap was born. As I'd added bits of other colored soap in green, yellow and red, the end result of the primarily "pea soup green" resembled the mountains of Virginia with the many wild flowers that grow in the area.

Last Minute Handmade Holiday Gifts and Stocking Stuffers - DIY Gifts You Can Craft in a Short Amount of Time with Grocery Store Trip

While the holiday season isn't quite in full force yet with Black Friday still around the corner, it won't be long. So while I know we still have time to shop for Christmas gifts now, I also know how time has a way of sneaking up on us and leaving us shopping for gifts at the last minute. Plus, there's always the possibility of those last minute guests arriving that we need to throw a gift together for. So whether you're here looking to put together some small gifts or stocking stuffers now for people you know and those who may show up at the last minute without notice - or you just happen to be down to the wire at the last minute on Christmas Eve - here are some gifts you can whip up in a short amount time with ingredients and supplies you can buy at most common grocery stores at the last second. I especially love these diy crafts as handmade stocking stuffers or gifts for co-workers.

Your New Boyfriend Handmade Sticker Set from Nowvember
Perfect for your teen who goes jumps between love and hate on a frighteningly common basis - or a college friend who's gone through a recent breakup - these handmade boyfriend stickers can be created last minute as a fun, gag gift. They are perfect in a stocking or included inside a Christmas greeting card. Simply find photos you'd like to use online for your "boyfriend faces" - they could be vintage photos of strangers or pictures of people you know - and save the files to your computer. Then open up a program like Word or Open Office - free through openoffice.org - and arrange your photos on the page sizing to yearbook photo size. Then simply print the page of photos out onto a full sized page sticker label. You can leave spaces in between the photos to draw colored hearts or other shapes with a permanent market. Cut out your stickers and package or draw dashes around each sticker so the recipient can cut out the stickers herself. Pre-made boyfriend sticker sets are available for sale through Nowvember.

Gifts for Guy Guests - Handmade BBQ Spice Rubs from kojo designs
The favorite men in my life have always loved to grill, so it's safe bet that a surprise male guest who shows up for the holidays will also have a penchant for cooking out. Playing off this for gifts is a safe bet and makes gifting in this situation easy. Simply mix up some flavorful, handmade grilling and bbq spice rubs as a stocking stuffer for the man in your life as well as his friends that decide to crash your Christmas party once family has dwindled. You can find the recipes for making Homemade Brown Sugar Rub for Pork or Beef, Homemade Tandoori Rub for Chicken, and Homemade Greek Rub for Chicken or Pork at kojo designs blog. There are also free printable labels that coincide with these recipes. And, you can always do a search for more recipes online. What really makes this a great gift is that if you make too much, you can stock the leftovers in your kitchen for your own use. (If you have time to shop online, Mountain Rose Herbs offers an excellent, quality selection of organic herbs and spices.)

DIY Homemade Rosemary Mint Sugar Scrub from Good Lifestyle
For the ladies I love being able to give gifts that pamper and I know I love to receive them as well. That's what makes this Homemade Rosemary Mint Sugar Scrub such a great gift! It's a little winter pampering to soothe the stress from the holidays! It's simple to make and doesn't require a preservative as the recipe is oil based. You can find the recipe for this DIY Rosemary Mint Sugar Scrub at Good Lifestyle Blog along with free printable labels for your project. I also like the recipe for an extra festive, DIY Candy Cane Sugar Scrub found at The Craftinomicon and this Delicious, Organic Lavender Sugar Scrub Recipe. For even more handmade sugar scrub recipe ideas, check out the article, DIY Sugar Scrub Recipes and Pretty Jar for enjoying and gifting, from Soap Deli News Blog. You may also like the article, DIY Bath and Body Round Up - DIY Ideas for Christmas Stocking Fillers. If your recipients would rather eat their sugar than slather in it, try out this recipe for making vanilla infused sugar. (If you have the time to order supplies online, I highly recommend the organic herbs, spices and essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs.)

Homemade Eggnog Cupcakes from Annie's Eats
More of a baker? Everyone on your list is sure to appreciate the recipe from Annie's Eats for Homemade Eggnog Cupcakes. The cupcake recipe calls for a flavorful addition of dark rum or bourbon and the icing on top includes a dash of rum, some eggnog, and bit of freshly grated nutmeg.

Homemade Chocolate-Dipped Marshmallows from Good Life Eats
Another tasty treat sensation sure to be devoured before your holiday party ends are these Homemade Chocolate-Dipped Marshmallows. The recipes can be found at Life Good Eats along with another scrumptious recipe for Chocolate Raspberry Vanilla Bean Marshmallows. Or you may prefer this simple Homemade Marshmallow Recipe found on Soap Deli News. Other edible gift ideas I like include: Divine Caramel Sauce Recipe - seal it in a jar with ribbon and jingle bells tied around the lid - and a recipe for Homemade White Chocolate Peppermint Fudge.

Down to just minutes before you're headed out the door? Print out a holiday wine label onto adhesive sticker paper, cut and go. Simply apply the label to a bottle of wine you have in your cupboard, or pick up a bottle from the store on the way to your destination! Martha Stewart has a nice selection of wine label clip art for Christmas and the New Year.

Handmade Christmas Cards - Make them. Share them. Store them.

The holiday season is underway! And if you're planning for a DIY Christmas and haven't started making gifts yet, now is the time! While you're making gifts though, don't forget the Christmas and Hanukkah cards! Handmade Christmas cards are a nice touch and they are easy to make with some cardstock, scrapbooking papers, and little bit of glue. MyDIYChat has seven great ideas for crafting your own handmade holiday Christmas greeting cards from scrapbooking materials.
Christmas Cards from Simply Radiant Blog
But if you want to get extra creative, consider a spin off traditional paper greeting cards. I'm in love with the boxed Christmas cards (pictured above) from Simply Radiant. Rather than using a paper card, the family instead took photos of them in a photo booth - one for every recipient - then tucked them into jewelry boxes with candy peppermints and shipped them via the postal service like tiny gifts to friends and family.

DIY Christmas Card Holder from According to Kelly Blog
While I'm sure you'll be busy crafting Christmas cards, don't forget you'll need a way to display all of the cards you receive throughout the holiday season. According to Kelly Blog has a super cute tutorial for making a DIY Wreath Christmas Card Holder. Made from a large embroidery hoop, some ribbon, clothespins, scrapbooking papers (this is a great time to use up those scraps), and a bit of hot glue, this Christmas card holder is not only easy to make, but looks great anywhere in your home for displaying your favorite cards from loved ones.

Greeting Card Organizer from Design*Sponge Blog
In case you get a little carried away with your handmade cards and make a few too many, then why not go even further and craft a DIY greeting card organizer? Not only will it give you a handy place to store your seasonal greeting cards for next year, but also to keep any other cards you may craft along the way for weddings, birthdays, and thank you's!

Will you be sending out handmade cards this holiday season?

Essential Oil Blend for Acne

Acne an issue? Mix up a homemade anti-acne essential oil blend to help target and heal acne blemishes!

Simply combine 1oz. rice bran oil - you can also substitute any carrier oil such as jojoba or olive, though I prefer rice bran oil or even fractionated coconut oil as they are non-greasy feeling - 4 of drops tea tree oil, 3 drops of lavender essential oil, 6 drops of rosemary essential oil, and 3 drops lemon essential oil in a glass container and mix well. This combination of tea tree, rosemary, lavender and lemon essential oils are known for their ability to fight acne due to their antiseptic properties, while lavender's anti-inflammatory properties help to ease redness and speed healing. Apply a small amount to affected area as needed with your fingertips or a cotton swap as needed as a spot treatment.

I also recommend apple cider vinegar for tough acne. Simply combine one part apple cider vinegar, one part witch hazel, and three parts green tea and mix well. Spritz on face or apply with a cotton ball as a toner after washing your face.

For quality, organic essential oils, I recommend shopping with Mountain Rose Herbs.

What types of natural products do you use as part of your face care regimen?

Get a Jump on the Holidays with these Handmade Stocking Stuffer Ideas

I am super psyched about the upcoming holidays. I love not only browsing, but shopping as well - especially for unique handmade items. But shopping is always the most fun for me when I am not rushed and have the time to seek out the perfect gift for everyone on my list! Stocking stuffers, however, are some of my most favorite things to shop for. The challenge of finding something that makes both a unique, but personal gift and fits inside a stocking is loads of fun for me. So here is another round of unique, handmade stocking stuffer ideas I've discovered over the past week. And there's still plenty of time in the season to not only keep seeking out that perfect gift, but to get your orders in with plenty of time left for shipping.

Mustache Note Blocks, 50 Sheets "I Mustache You A Question" handmade by Vincentine Design - Everyone can use a notepad, and this one is perfect for those who have succumbed to that wild and wonderful mustache trend. For more mustache themed stocking stuffers, consider crafting a handmade mustache keychain or making a fun mustache mug. Or buy a handmade Mustache Tie Bar!

Aromatherapy Essential Oil Blends for a Stress Free Holiday

Do the upcoming holidays have you a little stressed out? Aromatherapy can help to natural ease anxiety and stress. Before turning to other methods, try these essential oil aromatherapy blends first to calm your mind and mood!

To naturally ease anxiety, use 4-5 drops of the following essential oils in your humidifier or aromatherapy candle diffuser: rose maroc, lavender and marjoram. To calm your mind, try blending vetivert, sandalwood, chamomile and pine essential oils. Additionally, a blend of bergamot, mandarin and lemon verbena are thought to help ease depression.

Do you use aromatherapy? If so, what are some of your favorite scents and fragrance blends for the type of mood you want to be in?

For quality, organic essential oils, I recommend shopping with Mountain Rose Herbs.

DIY Legwarmers - A Fashion Statement for Fall

I loved legwarmers in the 80s not because they were a fashion statement, but because they kept my legs extra warm when playing outside in the snow. I was a kid then though, and by the time the 90s and high school hit, they'd gone out of style. Fortunately, they've come back with a sexy creative DIY twist from some very talented handmade gurus in styles you'd never be too embarrassed to wear. Plus, they're a snap to make yourself from upcycled clothing!

I found these super fun and funky, eco-friendly upcycled legwarmers today at cutrag on etsy. Made from recycled and vintage clothing, these legwarmers would look great with a skirt and boots and are the perfect trend for fall and the upcoming winter season! And, if you're the crafty sort, you can make your own diy legwarmers from old shirts and sweaters yourself with either a sewing machine or just a needle and thread. Here are a few creative ideas on the web for making your own handmade legwarmers.
