Handmade DIY Eco-Friendly Soy Wax Candles - Great for Favors and Gifts

Despite the fact that I make handmade soaps for a living, I've always been a little intimidated about making candles. Not to mention with the increasing costs for raw materials for soapmaking ingredients and continuously rising shipping prices, I've been reluctant to invest in buying wax because of the high shipping costs due to the sheer weight of the product. However, after discovering a little DIY for making handmade soy candles for less than a dollar each (not including the cost of the container) I think I may just give candle making a try.
Handmade Eco-Friendly DIY Soy Candle Wedding Favors from Ruffled
Ruffled Blog has an excellent diy tutorial for making eco-friendly soy candles on the cheap. While they suggest giving these as wedding favors, you could also make these for your own home use or for gift giving over the holidays or for other special occasions like birthdays or Mother's Day. This candle making project calls for natural soy wax flakes, cotton wicks, a fragrance oil - I like the candle fragrances available from Tennessee Candle Supplies, and a recycled glass container of your choice. You can buy matching containers on the cheap at the dollar or second hand store if you prefer. But your container won't cost a dime if you upcycle an existing container you already have such as a mason or jelly jar.

I'm thinking I may make some of these for handmade Christmas gifts this year. Perhaps in Tennessee Candle Supplies' Christmas Bazaar fragrance. It's a blend of Cinnamon, clove and nutmeg with a touch of vanilla. What about you? What's your favorite Christmas fragrance for candles?

Red Velvet Cake Vodka Recipe

Vodka is and always has been my drink of choice. So upon discovering last Saturday that local Grandin hot spot, The Village Grill, now offers Pinnacle Cake Vodka I was super excited. Being a HUGE fan of Pinnacle's Whipped Vodka - hello, Orange Dreamsicle! - I of course had the bartender whip me up a drink containing Pinnacle Whipped, Godiva White Chocolate and some chocolate syrup. Then I came home and printed out five pages of recipes from the Pinnacle website that contain this delicious tasting vodka. One of the recipes that I'll definitely be trying next time I'm at The Village Grill is Red Velvet Cake.

Red Velvet Cake (via Pinnacle Vodka)
2oz. Pinnacle Cake
1oz. chocolate liqueur
Splash grenadine

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

You can print all of the amazing recipes for Pinnacle Cake from a Birthday Cake Martini to a Coffee Cake Shooter at Pinnacle Vodka.

And since we're talking drink recipes, here are a few others I wouldn't mind giving a try:
4. Earl Grey MarTEAni - Okay, it's not vodka, but good gin runs a close second
10. And for the upcoming holidays - Candy Cane Flavored Vodka
11. For Halloween - Spooky Halloween Spirits that call for Black Vodka
12. Belline, Vodka, and Chocolate-Bourbon Popsicles - Because summer hasn't ended quite yet

Now, if you're REALLY a fan of Red Velvet Cake, you can still buy handmade Red Velvet Cake Goat Milk Lotion from Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen while supplies last.

So, what's your favorite drink of choice? Feel free to share a recipe for your favorite alcoholic drink in the comments.

Customize Your Handmade Soaps, Lotions and Potions with Free Printable Labels

What's more fun than making your own bath and body products? Why labeling them, of course! Even if you haven't quite mastered the skill of handcrafting your own handmade soaps, lotions and potions, you can still give store bought products your own special touch for gifting them on holidays and special occasions. Customizing your products and gifts is as simple as packaging them in a special way. Whether by wrapping them uniquely or just adding pretty labels! Following are a few free printable labels perfect for your apothecary bottles, handmade soaps and lotions.

D.I.Y. Vintage Apothecary Bottle Labels from Eat Drink Chic
These free printable, vintage apothecary labels from Eat Drink Chic are great for labeling bottles with or without product and giving them a retro look.

Bottle Labels for your Apothecary Products from WorldLabel.com
These fun printable apothecary bottle labels available for free download from  WorldLabel.com were designed by Cathe Holden of Just Something I Made Blog. They are available in a colored version (pictured above) and in cream only. Even better, the downloads allow you to change the font size, type and color as well as create your own custom text. This makes these labels perfect for customizing for wedding or party favors or marking a special holiday.

Printable Vintage Labels from Miss CutiePie
I'm also a fan of these round, vintage style printable labels from Miss CutiePie. They're perfect for labeling bottles, packages and round soaps.

For more links to free printable labels, visit my Printables Board on Pinterest. (What is Pinterest?) And for great prices on laser and ink jet sticker paper give WorldLabel.com a try. I recently tried them out and found they offered the same price on full sheet labels as my usual supplier, but that the labels didn't get hung up in my laser printer like the other brand did.

How to Make Your Own DIY Wooden Soapmaking Mold for Cold Process Soap

I've talked a lot about how to make your own handmade cold process soap and have even shared a collection of handmade soap recipes that you can try. What I haven't really covered though are soapmaking molds.
Easy to Make Soap Molds from Lowe's
If you're making your own soapmaking molds to save money, I've found that the easiest molds to make are wooden, rectangular soap molds. They're inexpensive to craft, easy to duplicate, and easy to make if you have the right tools. Lowe's shares an excellent tutorial on their website on how to make wooden loaf soap molds for your cold process soaps. If you don't own an electric saw and are unable to borrow one - or find someone to make these molds for you - you can make them yourself using a basic handsaw and a miter box. You'll also need sandpaper, clamps, glue, screws and a drill. My ex-husband and my dad both made soap molds for me very similar to the one pictured above. However, in lieu of a lid for my mold, I simply cover my mold of freshly poured soap with cardboard cut to fit on the top. It serves the same purpose. If you're interested in a step by step photo tutorial of the soapmaking process, be sure to check out my blog post on How to Make Soap (In Pictures!)
Lowe's also offers instructions on making a round pvc pipe soap mold. I haven't personally tried this one myself, but have heard the soap can be difficult to remove after. A quick pop in the freezer generally makes the soap easier to remove from a round pvc pipe mold, and it does help to have a plunger of some kind to help push the soap through and out of the mold. However, Lowe's does suggest lining the round soap molds with parchment which would ease in soap removal.

If you make soap, what is your favorite type of soapmaking mold to use? Do you have any tips on making the soapmaking process faster and easier? I'd love to hear your tips!

DIY Handmade Liquid Soap Recipe - How to Make Liquid Soap the Easy Way

Love liquid soap but having trouble finding a handmade version? You can make your own handmade liquid soap and not only save money, but use your favorite handmade soap for the recipe. Just one bar of handmade soap can be converted into almost 1 liter of a DIY liquid soap you're sure to love!
Turn a Bar of Soap Into Liquid Hand Soap from Savvy Housekeeping
I have heard that finding a handmade liquid soap is difficult. I, for one, tried making a liquid soap after various requests when I used to sell on the Roanoke City Market. However, it just didn't sell and it's more tedious to ship. However, you can create your own liquid soap using your favorite bar of handmade soap courtesy of instructions from Savvy Housekeeping. Simply grate a bar of your favorite handmade soap to yield 1 cup of soap flakes. Add water and a bit of glycerin and get to cooking until your soap flakes dissolve. Then allow to cool and pour into containers. For your full ingredient and material list, along with directions for this project, visit Savvy Housekeeping. And be sure to consider the shea butter soaps available from Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen for your liquid soap recipe.

With one bar of handmade soap and a few other easy to find ingredients, you can also make your own homemade liquid laundry detergent or powdered laundry detergent.

Creative Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas for Packaging Handmade Soaps and Other Bath and Body Products

It's never too soon to start thinking about Christmas and holiday events and parties. Sometimes these events require a gift with a special touch. For other get-togethers a collection of similar gifts will suffice - such as an office Christmas party. What makes the present truly special for the recipient though is receiving a package that's wrapped in such a special way it makes them feel important for just receiving it even if the value of the actual gift is small. One of my favorite things to give is soap, of course, Since I make it, I always have surplus on hand for holiday parties. Plus, it's something that can always be used. So here are a few packaging ideas I found for wrapping your own bath and body products and making them seem like the best thing under the tree!

Hand Printed Gift Wrap From Field Guide Design
Hand printed gift wrap can bring real presence to any item it covers. Unique designs and the care of a handmade paper encourage recipients to unwrap carefully and save the paper for a future project or wrapping their next gift. If you don't have time to drag out the stamps and paint to make your own from butcher block paper, then consider supporting an independent artist who crafts her own. For example, I love the designs of the hand printed gift wrap available from Field Guide Design. It runs $10 for 2 303x30 sheets.

Paper Twine on a Vintage Spool from Olive Manna
If you're looking to be a little more creative, consider stocking up on some "not your average" gift wrapping staples from Olive Manna. Her shop offers a wide assortment of textiles and paper goods including bags, boxes, and envelopes, clothespins, twine, ribbons, stickers, tags, and spools. Or simply forgo paper entirely and wrap in fabrics of all kinds with a little assistance from the DIY Cloth Wrap Tutorial found on Givers Log.

Trader Joe's Paper Bag Gift Wrap from Happiness Is...

If you're looking for some more specific ideas to use as a springing board, there here are some of my favorite gift wrap ideas I've discovered recently. I hope you'll find them as inspirational as I do. Plus, they all work perfectly for wrapping handmade soaps!

It's always great when you can recycle something that would otherwise get thrown away and turn it into something amazing. Here (pictured right) Shannon uses old holiday themed Trader Joe bags to wraps her gifts tying them off with some festive, red and white twine and labeling with tags. You could also get extra creative and scribble in some of your designs or even add a dash of color to the existing outlines.

Fabric Origami Box Tutorial from How About Orange
This next idea comes from How About Orange and uses a handmade, fabric origami box to create the perfect gift wrap complete with a lovely flower on top. I love this box for packaging square bars of handmade soap or a handful of handmade soap samples. It'd also be perfect for handmade lip balms or small vials of perfume! A little stiffened fabric, a few folds, and you're on your way. Cut flowers from leftover fabric and secure them together on the top of your package with a button for the flower's center! No bow necessary.

DIY Project from Style Me Pretty
Use silk flowers to decorate plain paper bags and have the perfect container for a girl's spa package. You can find the diy tutorial for making these silk flowers at Style Me Pretty Blog. Once you've made the number you need, simply fill your paper or craft bags with spa essentials such as handmade soap, body butter, and bath salts, then seal. Complete the package with a silk flower you've made yourself. This is also a great idea for giving favors for weddings or bridal parties.

Mini Glassine Envelopes from Inspire Lovely
Glassine Envelopes are a unique approach to gift wrapping. These Mini Glassine Envelopes from Inspire Lovely offer a creative way to package handmade soaps, lips balms, salves, and even test tubes of bath salts. Simply use a paper doily to set the background for the look of your package, fill it with your desired contents for gift giving, and complete the look by wrapping the package with some colorful baker's twine.

For someone you love, I suggest creating a heart stitched burlap bag with a drawstring to keep your gift cozy inside. Simply take a mini soap sized burlap bag like the ones found on Stampington & Company and decorate it with hearts you cut from wool and book text and a button. Then stitch everything together onto the sacks with embroidery floss. You can even customize the bag by embroidery the name of a loved on onto the bag or a special date if this is a wedding favor.

And finally, a few more packaging ideas for gifting your handmade soaps and other handmade body and skin care products:
Pretty Heart Soap from Cox & Cox
ETC Packaging from Hello Friend
DIY: Layered Borders with Masking Tape from Creature Comforts Blog

That post coincided with a contest to win some crocheted washcloths for yourself from Melissa G Hollis. Household Ideas for Pinching Pennies and Stretching Your Dime

I apologize for being off line for that past week or so. My wireless connection has been spotty at best, but it seems to be rolling along smoothly for now. I've got my fingers crossed that I can squeeze another year out of my wireless router since I've only gotten 14 months out of it so far. Luckily my ex-husband is still willing to fix things computer related for me on occasion. However, knowing now that cheap consumer wireless routers last only 1 to 3 years tops - the ex switches his out every two years - it means I'm going to have to budget for some new hardware soon. Which of course means finding ways to save money. While I've posted about how to save money on laundry and dishes by making your own laundry and dishwasher detergent and even household cleaners, here are a few others I've run across lately that I felt were worth sharing.

Natural Homemade Drain Cleaner Recipe from Tidy Mom
Tidy Mom has an excellent recipe for making an all natural, homemade drain cleaner using just baking soda and vinegar. Not only is it a LOT cheaper than buyer chemical drain cleaners, but it's non-toxic and won't harm the environment. Plus, it really does work. My parents use this method to clear their drains whenever the water starts to drain slowly. I'm not sure how well if at all if it works on standing water - anyone tried this before? - but if you use this solution on a regular basis you should have no worries.

Febreeze seems to be a household staple for most everyone since gaining popularity for its ability to neutralize tough odors after being introduced some years back. In fact, this past March this air freshener created by Procter & Gamble hit the $1Billion sales mark. The price for this product isn't cheap though. At a retail price of $5.59 each, it's not budget savvy for those on fixed budgets facing rising food and energy costs. But if you have pets or even kids into sports, it's not necessarily something you want to live without. So I was super psyched to find a knock off recipe for Febreeze at Fake It Frugal. A 32oz. bottle of the knock off costs just 15cents. I haven't tried this yet, but would love to hear feedback if you decide to give it a shot.

DIY Wallflowers Scented Plugin from Holy Crickey
If you enjoy scenting your home, but want a cheaper alternative, then turn to Holy Crickey for her diy idea for refilling your Wallflowers Scented Plugin with natural essential oils. Buying your essential oils in bulk will save money in the long run and you always know just what is going into your air because you choose the ingredients. Be sure to check out Holy Crickey for a photo tutorial of the process. You can also check out this recipe for diy gel air fresheners from Soap Deli News.

If you by chance have a bottle of cheap vodka left at your house from your last shindig that you don't plan to drink - I mean, I wouldn't use Grey Goose or Ciroc for this - you can finish it off with twelve great household uses for vodka found at Apartment Therapy. Vodka is great for things like keeping aphids off household plants, cleaning, removing stains on fabric, and even getting rid of the smell of cigarette smoke.

Don't throw out your leftover soap slivers. Instead, use the leftover soap bits from your shower to create a diy pre-laundry stain treatment. The recipe for this laundry stain remover is available on Tip Nut.

The next few ideas probably aren't going to save you money, but they will make your life easier. So you may want to also check out the following household tips as well.

1. When painting a room, keep some of the paint aside in an old baby food jar for quick touch ups. (via New Uses for Old Things: Kids Edition from Real Simple.)
2. Make salad in a jar and keep it fresh for up to 14 days while making enough to last for ten days at one time. Find out how at Salad in a Jar.
3. Use citrus oil to remove sticky residue from jars and other glass you want to recycle. (via Green Your Way.)
4. Add drawers to the bottom of your kitchen cabinets in order to create more storage space. You'll find the diy for building under-cabinet drawers at The Family Handyman.
5. Unexpected fruit flies? Trap them using a jar, a paper cone, and a banana. Find out how to make your own fruit fly trap at The Idea Room.

DIY Handmade Cupcake Bath Bomb Recipe and Tutorial

I am so hungry right now I've been eying these handmade Cupcakes Bath Bombs at Little Birdie Secrets and thinking about just how tasty they look. Unfortunately, they are not edible. But that's not to mean you can't make them smell that way. Think cotton candy and cherry lemonade icing. Or maybe white cake and buttercream frosting?

Cupcake Bath Bomb Tutorial from Little Birdie Secrets
If you're a huge fan of relaxing baths or just have kids who love a little something special in the tub, bath bombs make a great tub time addition. And cupcake bath bombs? Well, even better! Little Birdie Secrets offers an excellent step-by-step photo tutorial and recipe for crafting your own tasty scented bath time creations. The bottom cake layer of the bath bomb is your basic bath bomb or bath fizzy, while the top is an "icing" made with meringue powder for fluff (along with some sugar, cream of tarter, water, and color) that you apply to the cupcake just like you would cake icing. Ready to make your own? Surf on over to Little Birdie Secrets blog for the how to.

Or for some giant homemade fizzy bath bomb fun - with packaging that's about to "explode" - check out Skip to My Lou's foaming bath bomb recipe and packaging idea for making your bath bombs look like actual bombs.
